Hike To Moose Mountain South Peak

Today Troop 279 Scouts took a 6-mile hike.  Most of it on the Appalachian Trail (AT) on the way to the South Peak of Moose Mountain and Moose Mountain shelter! The scouts are required to hike 5 miles to earn the Second-Class rank.  The hike gave the scouts an opportunity to use a compass and map.  The scouts met a few through hikers on the AT both SOBO and NOBO hikers. All the hikers were many, many months into their journey.  What an inspiration to talk to those hikers.  The Scouts visited the south peak twice on the hike.  The first time the view from the peak was an ocean of ground fog seen from above.  The fog had cleared at the peak but not 1200 feet below.  The second time the fog had lifted, and the Scouts were given a clear view of Upper Valley.
